The Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU), in collaboration with the Department of Plant Biotechnology and the Centre for Life Sciences and Biotechnology, is conducting a five-day hands-on training workshop on gene editing in crop plants. The workshop, which commenced on January 27, 2025, has participants from various colleges and research institutes across India, including around 18 students and scientists.
The inaugural ceremony featured special guests, Director Dr. N. Senthil and Examination Controller Dr. V. Balasubramani. The session was inaugurated by Dr. E. Kogiladevi, Professor and Head of the Department of Plant Biotechnology, who welcomed the attendees.
In his address, Director Dr. N. Senthil elaborated on the advancements in crop gene editing both at Tamil Nadu Agricultural University and globally. He also highlighted the prospects for students pursuing research in plant gene editing, pointing out that genetically edited plants may be released without requiring bio-safety protocols.
Examination Controller Dr. V. Balasubramani discussed the role of CRISPR technology in gene editing plants and emphasized the significance of this training. Dr. L. Arul, Professor and Head of Plant Molecular Biology and Bioinformatics, delivered a vote of thanks.
