CMCH Explores Plasma Exchange for Snakebite Treatment

Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) has successfully treated two snakebite cases using plasma exchange therapy this year, marking a significant step in medical intervention. The first case was treated in January 2024.

However, CMCH Dean Dr. A. Nirmala emphasized that plasma exchange is not yet a proven treatment for snakebites. She stated that this method could only be used in select cases, particularly when liver failure occurs due to venom toxicity. The effectiveness of plasma exchange depends on the virulence and toxicity level of the snakebite.

Dr. Nirmala further explained that while plasma exchange has been successful in treating cases of rat killer and rodent poisoning, its use in snakebite treatment is still under research. To establish its effectiveness, CMCH has initiated a study in collaboration with the general medicine department and blood bank. The study aims to observe at least 50 successful cases before presenting the method on a global platform.

CMCH treats an average of 78 snakebite cases per month. Until October 2024, the hospital had treated 652 cases, with only 20 fatalities, bringing the fatality rate to below 4%. The hospital continues its efforts to reduce snakebite-related deaths to zero through advanced medical approaches.
