The T.N. Budget 2025 has announced a series of transformative projects for Coimbatore and Tiruppur, focusing on infrastructure, industrial growth, and public welfare. Key highlights include the Coimbatore-Tiruppur rapid metro rail, semiconductor parks in Sulur and Palladam, and a ₹348 crore allocation for the Western Bypass Phase 2. Additionally, the budget supports the textile and pump industries, electric buses, and drinking water projects in rural areas. These initiatives align with Tamil Nadu’s vision of becoming a $1 trillion economy, boosting employment and regional development.

Infrastructure and Transportation Boost

Coimbatore is set to receive a rapid metro rail project, aligning with long-term urban mobility goals. Additionally, ₹348 crore has been earmarked for the second phase of the Western Bypass project, which will further improve connectivity and ease traffic congestion.

Public transport is also getting a boost, with 75 new electric buses sanctioned for Coimbatore. These eco-friendly vehicles aim to enhance sustainable urban mobility while reducing pollution.

Support for Key Industries

The Centre of Excellence for the Pump Industry in Coimbatore and the Centre of Excellence for the Foundry Industry will promote research, technological advancements, and skill development. These initiatives are expected to strengthen the region’s position as a leader in these sectors.

S.K. Sundararaman, Chairman of the Southern India Mills’ Association (SIMA), welcomed the ₹30 crore allocation for modernizing power looms into shuttleless looms, which will enhance the quality of textile production. Additionally, ₹50 crores has been set aside over five years for fully automated fabric-cutting machines, benefiting MSME garment clusters in Tiruppur, Karur, Virudhunagar, and Chennai.

The technical textiles sector will receive ₹15 crore in funding, encouraging both existing manufacturers and new investors to explore this growing market.

Development Plans for Tiruppur

For Tiruppur, a significant ₹890 crore has been allocated for drinking water projects, covering 1,252 rural habitations and benefiting nearly 4.91 lakh residents. Additionally, a new government ITI (Industrial Training Institute) will be set up in Kangayam to strengthen skill development in the region.

K.M. Subramanian, President of the Tiruppur Exporters Association, highlighted that ₹1,980 crore allocated for textiles and handlooms will benefit the industry, particularly through expansions in hostels for women workers and the free sari and dhoti distribution scheme.

Archaeological and Renewable Energy Projects

The budget also includes plans for an archaeological excavation at Vellalore and a major renewable energy initiative, with 1,800 MW of power generation at Aliyar. These projects will contribute to both cultural heritage exploration and sustainable energy production in the state.

Industry Leaders Welcome Budget Announcements

Rajesh Doraiswamy, Chairman of CII Coimbatore, emphasized that with Tamil Nadu striving to achieve a $1 trillion economy, Coimbatore should aim to contribute 50% of the state’s GDP. He praised the government’s focus on industrial and economic growth in the city.

A. Sakthivel, Vice Chairman of AEPC, expressed optimism about the Coimbatore-Tiruppur rapid metro rail project and the establishment of an ITI in Kangayam, considering them vital for regional development.
