Coimbatore to Get International Hockey Stadium: Deputy CM to Lay Foundation on March 23

New sports facility aims to boost hockey development and infrastructure

Coimbatore is set to get its first International Hockey Stadium, as Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin will lay the foundation stone for the much-anticipated project on March 23 (Sunday). The ₹9.67-crore stadium will be constructed by the Coimbatore Corporation near the Corporation Higher Secondary School in R.S. Puram.

The project, initially proposed in 2014, has faced several delays over the years. However, with the foundation stone ceremony scheduled, the long-awaited sports facility is finally moving forward.

As part of his visit to Coimbatore, Mr. Stalin will also participate in an event at Tamil Nadu Forest Academy at 11 a.m., where he will oversee the distribution of newly procured weapons to the Forest Department staff. This initiative is part of a larger effort to modernize the forest force and improve weaponry for wildlife protection.

In addition, he will inaugurate a wildlife rescue and rehabilitation center at Pethikuttai in the Sirumugai forest range. The center, constructed on 20 hectares at a cost of ₹19.50 crore, aims to provide better care for injured and rescued animals.

Further, Mr. Stalin will inaugurate 69 completed projects worth ₹38.08 crore and lay the foundation stone for 140 new projects valued at ₹61 crore. As part of the event, he will also distribute welfare assistance to 40,000 beneficiaries, reinforcing the government’s commitment to social welfare and infrastructure development in the region.
