CCMC Sets Up Green Shades & Buttermilk Stalls to Combat Summer Heat

With rising temperatures, the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation (CCMC) has launched proactive measures to provide relief to the public. The corporation has started installing temporary green net shades at major traffic signals and arterial junctions across the city to shield motorists and pedestrians from the scorching summer heat.

The first shade was set up at Sivalaya Junction in Selvapuram, with similar installations planned for Gandhipuram, Kavundampalayam, Townhall, and Singanallur. The initiative was first introduced in May 2024, covering 10 key locations, including Saravanampatti, Sundarapuram, and Ramakrishna Junctions. This year, the same areas will be covered again, along with newly identified high-exposure spots.

Additionally, CCMC has set up buttermilk stalls at multiple locations, offering free buttermilk to help residents stay hydrated and cool during peak summer hours.

Corporation Commissioner M. Sivaguru Prabhakaran has instructed officials to survey and identify additional traffic signals where motorists need shade. The expenses for the shade installations and buttermilk stalls will be covered by CCMC’s general fund.

A CCMC official emphasized that these measures aim to make the summer more bearable for the city’s residents. “Last year’s initiative was well received, so we are expanding it this year to benefit more people,” the official said.

Locals have welcomed the move, expressing relief at having shaded waiting areas and access to free buttermilk. With temperatures expected to soar, these proactive steps are expected to offer much-needed respite to the people of Coimbatore.
