The first inclusive park is taking shape in Coimbatore, designed to cater to the needs of disabled children. The park, which spans 1.25 acres in Kalapatti, is being developed on corporation-owned land with funding from Robert Bosch as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative. The project is being implemented by the Residents Awareness Association of Coimbatore (RAAC).
According to R. Raveendran, secretary of RAAC, the park is designed to be fully accessible, ensuring that all play equipment is wheelchair-friendly. A total of 30 play structures will be installed, along with handrail-equipped pathways and tactile flooring to support visually impaired visitors.
Beyond play areas, the park will also feature an activity center where children can participate in art, craft, and music classes. Additionally, single parents of disabled children will be supported through small-scale production activities, such as making areca leaf plates, to help them achieve financial independence.
The project is being executed in two phases. The first phase includes the play area and activity center, while the second phase will introduce an assistive technology library displaying adaptive support products from various manufacturers. This will allow children to explore and experience different assistive technologies. Furthermore, a dedicated turf area will be developed for inclusive sports like half-court basketball and volleyball.
Construction is expected to be completed within a month, after which the park will be open to the public, creating a welcoming and accessible space for children of all abilities.
