Murthi, a 40-year-old man from Sirumugai near Mettupalayam, Coimbatore, lost his left hand and sustained severe injuries to his right hand, legs, and abdomen in 2008 due to an electric shock while working on a centering job. Following the accident, he left the job and now works carrying vegetable sacks for a living.
His wife also works in a local mill. Their children, a daughter in 12th grade and a son studying in a private college, are continuing their education despite the family’s financial difficulties.
On January 20, 2025, Murthi submitted a petition to the Coimbatore District Collector’s office seeking financial assistance to support his children’s education. He explained that while he receives a monthly assistance amount for the differently-abled, his income from carrying sacks is insufficient to cover educational expenses. Murthi mentioned that due to his disability, many employers refuse to hire him, further complicating his financial situation. He emphasized that both he and his wife have been working hard to support their children’s education but now face the challenge of affording his son’s college fees.
