Coimbatore to Get 39 Modern Bus Stops on Avinashi Road with Wi-Fi & More

Upgraded bus stops to enhance commuter convenience with better facilities and digital services.

Coimbatore Corporation has announced plans to set up 39 modern bus stops along Avinashi Road, aiming to improve public transport infrastructure with advanced amenities. These bus stops will feature Wi-Fi, comfortable seating, and restrooms to enhance commuter convenience.

To bring this project to life, the corporation has engaged a private consultant who has proposed three different design models. The final design is yet to be selected. The initiative will be implemented through a public-private partnership (PPP), allowing the civic body to generate revenue from advertisements displayed at the bus stops.

On Friday, Corporation Commissioner M. Sivaguru Prabhakaran inspected various locations along Avinashi Road to finalize the placement of these bus stops. Initially, 33 locations were shortlisted, with 15 stops planned from Uppilipalayam to Goldwins and 18 in the opposite direction. However, after further review, the commissioner instructed officials to extend the plan to include bus stops near KMCH Hospital, extending up to the corporation limits, increasing the total number to 39.

The designs and amenities at each stop will be finalized based on location-specific requirements. The ongoing construction of the Avinashi Road flyover and the upcoming metro rail project have been considered in the planning process. A budget of ₹2.64 crore has been allocated for the project, but the estimated cost may require private sector participation for successful execution and maintenance.

A design team from Chennai has been engaged to develop 3D models of the bus stops, similar to modern structures seen in Chennai. At least 30 of these new bus stops will have dedicated bus bays, depending on the space available at each site. The corporation is optimistic that this initiative will significantly improve the city’s public transport experience and set a benchmark for future infrastructure projects.
