Coimbatore’s Semmozhi Poonga Nears Completion with 75% Work Done

The Coimbatore City Corporation has completed 75% of the work on Semmozhi Poonga, a large urban park being developed on the Central Prison ground in Gandhipuram.

The construction began in December 2023 after Chief Minister M.K. Stalin laid the foundation stone. The 45-acre park is being developed with an estimated budget of ₹161.05 crore.

According to a corporation status report, about 80% of work on the open-air stadium and entrance gate has been completed, with final work expected by March-end. Meanwhile, only 30% of the work has been done on underground drainage, treated water pipelines, stormwater drains, telecommunication cables, and electricity cables.

Other developments include:

  • Ticket counter building: 65% complete
  • Compound wall: 95% complete
  • Toilets: 80% complete
  • Gardener’s room: 60% complete
  • Canteen/food court and commercial outlets: 60% complete

Designed per international standards, Semmozhi Poonga will feature 22 theme-based gardens, including an herbal garden, aromatic garden, classic garden, rain garden (water restoration), and pollinator garden.
