Residents of Kovaipudur have strongly opposed the Coimbatore Corporation’s plan to construct a garbage transfer station in their locality, citing concerns over foul odor, hygiene issues, and the impact on nearby residential areas.
The Corporation has begun work on the ₹9 crore project, which is expected to handle 200 tonnes of waste per day at Q-Block, Kovaipudur. However, locals fear that the new facility will worsen existing sanitation problems. “There is already a Micro Composting Centre (MCC) here, and we are already struggling with bad odor and flies. The proposed transfer station will make things worse, especially since several houses and a public park are located nearby,” said A. Baskaran, a resident.
The Kovaipudur Residents’ Welfare Association has formally submitted a petition to Mayor R. Ranganayaki, urging the Corporation to reconsider the decision and find an alternative location for the facility.
Meanwhile, a sanitary official from the Corporation assured that the garbage transfer station would not cause foul odors, as it is only meant for waste collection and redistribution, with no processing taking place on-site. However, residents remain skeptical and continue to push for the project’s relocation.
