On January 20, 2025, residents of Somayampalayam Panchayat submitted a petition to the Coimbatore District Collector in protest against the merger of their panchayat with the Coimbatore Corporation. The residents wore black patches to express their opposition to this decision.
Recently, the Tamil Nadu government issued a notification regarding the merger of several panchayats with municipal corporations and the creation of new municipal corporations. As part of this process, nine panchayats, four town panchayats, and one municipality are set to be merged with the Coimbatore Corporation, leading to protests from some panchayat residents.
As part of their opposition, the residents of Somayampalayam conducted a signature campaign yesterday. Today, they visited the District Collector’s office, presented the signed petitions, and urged that their panchayat should not be merged with the corporation. The residents also pointed out issues like inadequate bus services, suggesting that these could be resolved by local panchayat officials.
