The Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation (CCMC) has submitted a revised Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the construction of a twin bus terminus at Ukkadam, aligning it with the upcoming Metro Rail project. The proposal, submitted to the Directorate of Municipal Administration (DMA) on Monday, includes modifications to ensure seamless integration with the metro system, as Ukkadam is set to become a key transit hub for all four metro corridors.

Revised Plans for Ukkadam Bus Terminus

The original plan for the Ukkadam bus terminus was announced by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on March 13, 2024, with a budget of ₹20 crore. However, the final DPR now estimates the cost at ₹21.55 crore. The plan includes two separate bus terminals:

1. One near the Ukkadam police station—where the existing terminus is located.

2. Another on the opposite side of the police station—to expand capacity and ease congestion.

With the metro rail project taking shape, officials from Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) met with the district administration on December 24, 2024, to discuss how to integrate the metro infrastructure without disrupting existing and future development projects. Following this consultation, the CCMC made necessary revisions to the bus terminus design.

Ensuring Metro Rail Integration

CCMC Commissioner M. Sivaguru Prabakaran stated, “The final DPR for the Ukkadam bus terminals has been submitted. The project will be executed at an estimated cost of ₹21 crore. We have revised our plan to allocate sufficient land for Metro Rail construction, ensuring enough space for pillars and other structures.”

This strategic adjustment will allow the metro project to progress smoothly while enhancing connectivity for commuters in Coimbatore. The new design aims to accommodate increasing passenger demand and improve urban mobility.

Future Plans for Gandhipuram Bus Stand

In addition to the Ukkadam project, CCMC is preparing another DPR to demolish the 50-year-old Gandhipuram Bus Stand and construct a modern facility at a cost of ₹30 crore. This upgrade is expected to further enhance the city’s public transport infrastructure.

With these developments, Coimbatore is moving towards a more integrated and efficient public transport system, catering to the city’s rapid urban growth and increasing commuter needs.
