In 2020, under the AIADMK government, a sum of ₹168 crore was sanctioned for the construction of an Integrated Bus Terminus (IBT) at Vellalore. A 61.81-acre land parcel was identified next to the Vellalore dumping yard, and construction began. However, when the DMK government took office in 2021, the project was halted for various reasons. By that time, 40% of the construction work had already been completed, with ₹52.46 crore spent from the Corporation General Fund.
New Plan for the Vellalore Site
With the IBT project abandoned, CCMC officials explored alternative uses for the land. Initially, plans were made to establish a wholesale vegetable and fruit market, a heavy vehicle parking facility, and a parcel office. However, the vegetable and fruit merchants declined the proposal, citing business and logistical challenges.
As per the CCMC’s new proposal, the Vellalore site will now include:
- 130 vegetable stalls
- 118 fruit stalls
- Essential amenities such as ATMs, toilets, and bathrooms
- Facilities to accommodate people with disabilities
Now, CCMC sources have confirmed that the site will be repurposed for:
- Relocating the Ukkadam truck terminal to Vellalore, reducing traffic congestion in the Ukkadam-Athupalam area.
- Establishing a dedicated parcel booking office to enhance logistics operations.
- Eliminating truck parking issues along the L&T Bypass Road would improve road safety and traffic flow.
An official announcement regarding this redevelopment plan is expected soon.
