Coimbatore’s Iconic VOC Park: Stunning Transformation into a Bird Sanctuary

3-4 acre Former Zoo Space to Showcase Exotic Birds and Interactive Experiences in Heart of City

In a move that promises to rejuvenate one of Coimbatore’s most cherished landmarks, the city corporation has decided to convert the former VOC Zoological Park into a vibrant aviary. This decision marks a return to the original plan for the site, which was initially envisioned as a bird sanctuary before being earmarked for other purposes. The transformation is set to breathe new life into the 3.03-acre space, offering residents and visitors a unique opportunity to connect with nature.

A Legacy of Wildlife

Established decades ago, the VOC Zoological Park was once a thriving hub of biodiversity, home to 334 birds, 46 reptiles, and 152 mammals. However, after the Central Zoo Authority (CZA) canceled its license due to inadequate maintenance, the zoo was forced to close its doors in 2022. By 2023, most of the wild animals were relocated to other parts of the state, including the Siruvani forest range. Only a few species, such as pythons, kites, crocodiles, deer, ducks, and herons, were retained on-site.

Despite the closure, the corporation remained committed to repurposing the space for public use. Initially, plans were made to develop the area into an open-air study center, with ₹75 lakh allocated in the 2024-25 budget for the project. However, after careful consideration, the civic body has decided to revert to its original vision of creating an aviary, a decision that has been warmly welcomed by the community.

A New Chapter: The Aviary Plan

On Monday, Coimbatore Corporation Commissioner M. Sivaguru Prabakaran confirmed that the zoo site will indeed be transformed into an aviary. The facility will house a variety of exotic and native bird species, including African lovebirds, Indian lovebirds, African grey parrots, cockatiels, and peacocks. Additionally, plans are underway to introduce exotic reptiles, such as small pythons and lizards, to enhance the visitor experience.

Dr. S. Saravanan, the zoo director, shared insights into the project, stating, “We have already relocated all wild animals to the Siruvani forest range. The remaining species, along with new additions, will form the core of the aviary. Our goal is to create a space that is both educational and engaging for visitors.”

Current Status and Development Process

The primary land survey for the aviary has already been completed, and a detailed project report (DPR) is expected to be prepared soon. This report will outline the scope, budget, and timeline for the project, ensuring that the aviary meets the highest standards of design and functionality. Interactive features, such as opportunities for visitors to hold and photograph birds, are also being considered to make the experience more immersive.

Economic and Community Impact

The aviary is expected to become a major attraction, drawing both locals and tourists to the heart of Coimbatore. By reviving the VOC Park site, the project will not only enhance the city’s recreational infrastructure but also provide a significant boost to nearby commercial establishments, including eateries and shops.

As Coimbatore eagerly awaits the completion of this ambitious project, the VOC Park Aviary stands as a testament to the city’s commitment to preserving its natural heritage while embracing innovation. Stay tuned for more updates as this iconic space prepares to take flight once again!
